Matcha Blueberry Smoothie
Food as medicine highlight
This smoothie features several ingredients that offer powerful benefits for overall health, however I created this smoothie with brain health in mind! Blueberries are a rich source of polyphenols and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients while remaining low in sugar and high in fiber. They contain a particular flavonoid called anthocyanins that have been shown in research to improve memory in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Overall, blueberries protect the brain due to their high antioxidant content which can reduce oxidative stress. Matcha is another superstar here. Green tea leaves are turned into powder to create matcha, making it a potent source of phytochemicals and antioxidants such as catechins and in particular, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The compounds in green tea have been shown to be protective of brain health and may improve cognitive function. I LOVE replacing my coffee with matcha because it provides a nice boost of energy, while having a mellowing effect thanks to the compound L-theanine.
Ingredients
1 cup unsweetened cashew milk (I used Elmhurst brand and prefer cashew milk as it’s more creamy, although any non-dairy/dairy milk will do)
1/3 cup grass-fed whole milk yogurt (I used Nancy’s brand)
1 cup organic frozen blueberries
1 scoop of Designs for Health Unflavored WheyCool Protein (this may be purchased through my supplement store, or you may use your favorite protein powder)
1 teaspoon matcha powder (I used Wild Foods brand)
1 tablespoon chia seeds
Directions
Blend all ingredients in a blender on high for 45-50 seconds or until the smoothie is a good consistency.
Enjoy!
